Overview

An 1800s weatherboard house in North Fremantle had been neglected for some time before Architects Michael Petroni & Andrea Quagliola bought the property to turn into two sympathetically refurbished and extended semi-detached units.

The project was awarded first in the City of Fremantle and Town of East Fremantle’s Heritage Awards 2013 in the category for the Conservation of a Residential Heritage Place.

Key Structural Design Features

The building appeared to have been flat packed and moved wholesale from a previous location, possibly the gold fields, or another site in Perth at some time in the past.   Atelier JV were able to work with the existing structure to find the areas where it needed strengthening and retain most of the existing fabric of the building.

The rear extension was created using as little steel as possible with glulam and traditional pine beams, joists and studs in keeping with the existing structure and making use of the skilled carpenters that would be needed on site to refurbish the existing frame.   This made the project cost effective for the clients allowing them to maximise their spaces and designs.
